Sunday Snaps v. 2

A few glimpses at my week. From a necklace left behind to a beautiful sunshine-filled morning, to new glasses, to stripe love, a frosty sky, and the first flowers of spring in our front yard, some colourful bags, a few fashionably Canadian reads, and a new favourite nail colour from Essie (Master Plan, if you're interested).

This week? I'll be touring around my beautiful Island with an author visiting from Quebec City. My first ever author tour! I'm hoping to show her some of my favourite spots across the province, so although I'm a bit nervous, it should be fun! And of course, I will be snapping photos along the way!

What were the highlights of your week? I'd love to hear in the comments!

Decisions, Decisions

Decisions Decisions
Top to Bottom: Tenley, Evelyn, & Griffin

With brighter, warmer, sunnier days finally upon us here on my beloved isle, a long-ignored need is once again arising. Prescription sunglasses! Normally I wear cheapie sunglasses with my contacts, but the last time I bought a prescription pair was in high school - shockingly long ago. Obviously, it's time for an upgrade.

Luckily for me, one of my favourite frame purveyors Warby Parker (whose genius library presentation I posted about here) are now offering a stellar line-up of Rx sunnies. There's a pretty fantastic selection, and i am down to these three options.  I'm admittedly leaning towards the Tenley (the top pair) but the Evelyn and Griffin pairs are making the decision process tricky.

Which pair would you pick? I'd love to know!

Music Monday: Mission Bells

As some of you may know, I'm a huge fan of Coeur de Pirate, and so of course was excited when I saw her collaboration with Jay Malinowsky of Bedouin Soundclash to form a duo known as Armistice. I downloaded their 5 song mini-album pretty much immediately (have a listen, and download here) and their tunes have been frequently playing through my rotation ever since.

This tune, Mission Bells, is one of my favourites - have a listen and enjoy!

No Man of Her Own

I have long loved old movies, and I don't know how I missed this amazing looking film, No Man of Her Own featuring Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, released in 1932. Carole, playing a ''lonely, but slightly wild librarian'' (against Gable's card shark on the run) wears the most beautiful clothes - the epitome of library-chic.

I'm always interested to see how librarians are represented in pop culture, both past and present. Personally, I can't wait to track down this old film noir and take some inspiration for my own library style.

What are some of your favourite old movies?

Reading in Style v. 2

After my first Reading in Style post, I was keeping an eye out for more book, library or reading-themed posts, and much to my delight, so many lovely ones were posted by many of my favourite (and in some cases newly discovered) bloggers (p.s. If you'd like one of your bookish posts to be featured, email me! I'd love to include you in the next one!).

Take a look at some of my favourite reading ladies below:

Ale of Rosaspina Vintage
I love this photo of Ale from Rosaspina Vintage. It is so whimsical and fun, and everything from her tights to the cover of the book are sprinkled with spring flowers. So pretty!

L: Federica of Sweet as a Candy R: Coury of Fancy Treehouse
I initially found this photo of Federica on Pinterest, and whoever pinned it didn't source the image (tsk tsk!). With help from a friend (Thanks Alli!) I was able to track down (and end up following) Federica's beautiful blog, which actually is as Sweet as a Candy. So pretty!

Coury's blog, Fancy Treehouse, has been one of my favourites for a while. I love this shot of her reading one of the beautifully cloth-covered Penguin Classics. I'm not even kidding when I say it's a goal of mine to collect all of these pretty books - lovely!

Marguerite Gisele
I discovered Marguerite's blog via a post by Rebecca from The Clothes Horse. I think what drew me to this photo in particular was the fact that this very thing has happened to me many times (although I'm aware that this is very likely a staged shot). Drifting off to sleep while curled up on a bed reading a pile of good books? Sounds like a good afternoon to me!

Alix of The Cherry Blossom Girl
Alix of The Cherry Blossom Girl featured in my last Reading in Style post but her post inspired by Gorey's "The Gashlycrumb Tinies" was too perfect not to share.
Janis of Dress Me Dearly
I sadly missed meeting Janis of Dress Me Dearly by about a week and a half, since she visited Ottawa from Edmonton to cover fashion week just after I moved home to PEI. These might be my favourite photos because not only is she reading in style, but she's actually in a library! So perfect.

Hannah of Hannah and Landon
Hannah of Hannah & Landon has been one of my inspirations for a long time. She's a fellow redhead, stylish in the most romantic of ways (Not to mention the talented creator behind The Loved One) and consistently blogs the most ethereal and absolutely lovely photography. This shot of her reading is one of my all-time favourites for so many reasons.

Christina of For Show
Last but certainly not least, Christina of For Show, whose blog I discovered thanks to Lydia of Style is Style. I loved her whole book themed post, pretty polka-dotted dress and perhaps most of all? That perfect pair of glasses = win.

Have a bookish style post you'd like to share? I'd love to feature it in my next Reading in Style round-up. Submit your reading style by sending me an email at rebecca (at) lotsixtyfive.com.

Lauren Elan - Spring 2012

Top L-R: Monet, Elise, and Bennett
Toronto-based jewelry line Lauren Elan is designed by the talented (and very stylish - check her instagram!) Lauren McMillan, and has been one of my favourites for a long time. If you follow me on Pinterest, I'm sure you will have noticed some of her lovely baubles making their way on to my accessory wishlist. Lauren Elan pieces always make a statement but at the same time are so irresistibly versatile that you end up wanting to incorporate them into every outfit.

Lauren's latest Spring collection has recently launched, and I was thrilled to see so many new beautiful pieces, especially those featuring my favourite colour, turquoise. Gorgeous! The designer herself was kind enough to take a few minutes from her busy schedule to answer a few of my questions about her take on this latest offering - Thanks so much Lauren!

What were the trends, images, experiences that inspired this latest collection?
The current collection was greatly influenced by rich textures, vibrant colours, and mixed materials. Neon, brights, and sparkle is always something that I try to work into the collection, so when I'm in the creating process, I look to incorporate as much of it as I can!

The Kensington
If you had to pick one favourite piece from among your newest creations, which would it be & why?
The Kensington is my current favourite as 'fluoro lime' is my absolute favourite colour of this season (see my pinterest board haha). It's a definitely an investment that looks great with something as simple as jeans and a casual tee, to a fancier dress with hair pulled back. Luckily, I don't have a tonne of this colour in my wardrobe, so it's easy to add to a look and not be worried that I'll be overwhelmed with lime. It's a great 'clash' colour.

L Top to Bottom: Elena, Lily, & Briah
Who do you envision wearing these baubles? Who, in your mind is the Lauren Elan ''girl''?
I find that my choice of bauble changes so much with the mood i'm in for the day, that I created pieces that you can wear on that day that you just want a classic chain bracelet, or throw on something major if you need to add some pizazz to wake yourself up.

Statement jewellery can sometimes be a bit of a risk, so I think that the 'Lauren Elan' girl is someone who is okay with stepping outside the 'safe' zone of fashion and wearing something that she can make her own, not wearing a look that everyone else has on.

I'm already filling up my summer wishlist with these gorgeous pieces. My one must-have from the spring offerings? The Elise! Hoping to snap that lovely necklace up, and stat.

Which of these lovely accessories is your favourite?

Music Monday: Out of the Game

If the library setting of this music video by Rufus Wainwright wasn't awesome enough, Helena Bonham Carter as horn-rimmed-spectacle wearing librarian puts it over the top. Obviously I had to share with you all!

Easter Bells

I think of the garden after the rain;
And hope to my heart comes singing,
At morn the cherry-blooms will be white,
And the Easter bells be ringing!

                                      - Edna Dean Proctor, "Easter Bells"

On this Good Friday, for those of you who are celebrating Easter, I wanted to send the warmest wishes for a happy Easter weekend.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico

Really loving the series of artistic videos commissioned by Joe Fresh. This (my favourite) is an eerily beautiful video by Deborah Turbeville, but there are two others, one by Sue de Beer and one by Ellen von Unwerth which are completely different and also equally worth watching.

The Jazz Age

Even though I no longer live there, I admit I am always delighted to see Ottawa's own Herieth Paul (who is doing her hometown very proud) featured either on the runways (She opened for Burberry Prorsum this season!!) or in the pages of a magazine.

This talented young lady having some major fashion moments, and so I was delighted to see her star in a Flare editorial featured in this month's most recent issue. Shot by Max Abadian and expertly styled by Liz Cabral, Herieth shines in some seriously lovely jazzy ensembles and what can only be described as a pretty major blonde wig. My favourite? The last shot at the piano. Beauty.
